Northern Thailand Hill Tribe Trail

Beyond Chiang Mai — A Northern Thailand Few Travellers Know

Trade the beaches and big-city temples for the green folded mountains of the north — where tribes, traditions and time move at a different rhythm.

An Off-Beat Loop Through Thailand's Mountain Heart

Most travellers visit northern Thailand, see Chiang Mai for three days, and fly south. But the north is layered — and its deeper layers lie further out: in the Golden Triangle where three nations meet, in the highland villages of the Akha and Lahu, in the mist-folded hairpins of the Mae Hong Son loop, and in the bohemian river valley of Pai.

This nine-day journey traces that quieter route. You'll meet hill-tribe elders, walk through tea forests, drift on bamboo rafts, and stay in mountain lodges where the only sound is the river. The pace is gentle, the experiences are real, and the encounters are unhurried.

It's a journey for travellers who already know Thailand — and want to know it better.

The Mae Hong Son Loop

1,864 hairpin turns of mountain road, with stops at hidden Burmese temples, hot springs and viewpoints along the way.

Wat Rong Khun, the White Temple

Visit the surreal modern masterpiece outside Chiang Rai — part contemporary art installation, part working Buddhist temple.

Bamboo Raft on the Pai River

Drift through misted river valleys on a traditional bamboo raft, stopping for a riverside picnic in the jungle.

Sunrise Hot Springs at Pong Duet

A pre-dawn soak in natural hot springs as forest mists rise — followed by Thai coffee at a roadside stall.
